Questions
What nearly everyone asks
Which evening and weekend hours do you have?
We are open Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Which hours a clinician keeps is on their page.
Do you take my insurance?
We bill most PPO plans and some employee assistance programs, and we match you with a clinician who is on your plan. We do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. We check your benefits before your first session.
What is a superbill, and may my plan reimburse it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt with the dates and kind of session, which you can send to your plan and which may be reimbursed in part. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see, and your plan decides whether it pays anything.
What is a good faith estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How do fees work, and does an evening hour cost more?
The fee is set by the length of the session, and an evening or weekend hour costs the same as any other. With insurance you pay your plan's copay or deductible. Without it, we give you a written estimate before you start.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. We take HSA and FSA cards at the end of each session like any other card.
What happens in the first session?
It lasts 60 minutes. Your clinician explains how they work, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, and listens. At the end you both decide whether to continue.
How often, and for how long?
Individual sessions are 50 minutes and couples sessions are 80 minutes. Most people keep a standing evening or weekend time each week or every other week. Your clinician sets the pace with you, and we do not promise a number of sessions.
Are you licensed where I live?
Our clinicians are licensed in Iowa. In person, anyone is welcome at the Pierce Street office. By video, you must be in Iowa during the session.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This site and our messages are not monitored around the clock.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you share stays in the session. The law sets limits: if someone is at serious risk of harming themselves or another person, or if abuse of a child or an older adult is suspected, your clinician may have to tell others. We explain this in writing before you start.
Can you see my teen?
We see adults, age 18 and over. If you are looking for a clinician for a teen, we will gladly give you the names of colleagues.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to change or cancel an appointment. If you give less, tell us what happened and we will talk it through.
